I am a long time junker and lover of all things old. I am from a family of treasure hunters and as a child remember pulling up to many old homesteads with my parents and two siblings. We would get out and dig for the day--oh, what treasures we would find! I love repurposing junk and finding new ways of incorporating it into home decor.
I am also the busy mom of three boys and a very bad dog, and work as a pediatric nurse. I have been inspired by Junk Market for a few years now. Joining this site is a way of supporting and thanking them for keeping my creative juices flowing!! Thanks Junk Market!!

Hi Kathy,
I so enjoy seeing these posts, as we don't have anything that compares where I live. I actually can't believe my eyes looking at all the amazing finds--very curious to know what the pricing is like. Our local flea market has changed in the past few years and now it is mostly new cheapy dollar store stuff.
I think the thingy you didn't know about is an old shoe cleaner.....people used them to clean the muck off the bottom of their shoes before going inside.
Happy day my friend.

Wow....unbelievable. They all look gorgeous. Very inventive. I once decorated for a fundraising event for people living on the street-----I went around collecting hubcaps off the side of the road and used them for centerpieces---anyways, when I saw your last project (it reminds me of the inside of a wheel thingy) I thought those would have made awesome centerpieces with the glass on top.

Re: "PARISIEN ADVENTURES"

Thank you ALL so much for the wonderful comments!!! I really appreciate you all!!!
Just a word about the vinyls...........yes, they are hard to find!!! I found a scrapbooking store called "treasury of memories" in Bellingham, Washington that you can order vinyls from on line. Just google search them----they will do any font, size and wording for you. You can also buy sheets of vinyl letters at office supply stores. Also, asking at your local scrapbooking store might be helpful--sometimes they can order in stuff they don't usually carry.
Hope that helps.

Re: "NURSERY RHYME JUNK"

Thank you all SOOO much for your encouraging comments....I really appreciate them!!
In answer to some of the questions you had: As I frequent my local thrift stores I, too, frequent Michaels and the scrapbooking stores in my area looking for interesting rub-ons. You can also make your own rub-ons using a special paper usually found at scrapbooking stores. Vinyls are fun and easy to apply to almost any surface as well. You can make your own vinyl rub-ons (the possibilities are endless) using machines such as the "wishblade". I do usually clear-cut over top of the rub-ons, but not the vinyls.
Hope this helps....happy junking (and crafting)!

Re: "WHOLIE DOILIE!"

Hi Judi
I guess you can say that I don't really take care of them at all. These particular doilies sat in a box for years...now I just hand wash them in some Woolite and hang to dry. If they are particularly messy after washing I'll just take the iron lightly to them. And I don't worry about the odd stain as I think it adds to the vintage appeal.....mind you I definitely take them off the table if we are having sphagetti!!!
Hope that helps.
xojanis

Re: "WHOLIE DOILIE!"

Thanks so much for the feedback my junking friends. Yes, Judi, please do come on over and we'll junk the day away!!! I added the words to the glass container and will definitely do a post on the how-to for you guys.

xojanis

Re: HELP PLEASE! Sideboard and Hutch is not me....Can you ladies help me with some sort of painting technique?

You know I have to say that I agree with italianpeasant....I had some beautiful old pieces of furniture from one of my grandmothers, but I just didn't like the wood stain so they stayed in the basement for years. When I finally took the plunge and painted them I was amazed at how the detail in the woodworking just "popped"!!! They are now my most prized possessions and I don't feel at all quilty about painting them. I, personally, would go with white as it really seems to bring out detailing, but I think you have to decide what would look best with your own style.
I also recommend using "bulls eye" primer....it is amazing and doesn't require messy sanding to prime the piece for paint.

What ever you decide please show us the after pictures.
Good luck!!!
xojanis

Re: MESSAGE DOOR-VINTAGE ITEMS

So sweet...these posts brought tears to my eyes. Memories of days gone by are so special and important, and we are all so blessed to have a venue where we can show ways we preserve and remember past generations!!

Re: "LIGHT IT UP!!!"

Hi rebeljunker.
"Whitewash"(to me)simply means thinning your paint with a little water (colour of your choice), putting a little on your brush (I wipe the brush on paper towel to remove some), then paint your surface. This way the original surface shows through. The alternative would be to paint as usual then sand to roughen up and show the underneath surface.

Hope this helps.....I seem to learn most things through trial and LOTS OF ERROR!!
