One day on the way home from scrounging I stopped by the store to pick up some sandwich stuff and the lady looked at me (I was pretty scruffy looking)and asked if I was paying with food stamps! It's a big family joke now. Has the lower price of metal affected how much you find now? I can't believe the difference in the price now and 6 months ago.

Great find. Did you say you found these at the scrap yard--is that a metal scrap yard? Those are my favorite places of all time and I have spent many a Saturday morning scrounging through the junk. Unfortunately, our local yard has banned us because of liability reasons. I even offered to work part time just to get to see the junk. I can still go there to sell metal and if I'm crafty I can pick up a few things while selling. Just have to make sure my weight isn't more when I leave than when I come! BTW--I love these gears. The suggestions for the Junk Beautiful and Junk Style books is great also. These have some wonderful ideas and get your creative juices flowing. Also, there is a site that a friend of mine has that has good ideas and it is arranged so that it is easy to use. The site is: www.robojunker.com

Hi Junkinhart. My welder is a Hobart Handler 140. I've been really happy with it but I really don't know a lot about the different brands. This was like the one my instructor had so I was used to it. I got my first exposure to welding by taking a 2 day class from a local metal sculptor (check out his stuff at http://funksculp.com). We didn't get to do much of our own welding during the 2 day class so I went to the local vo-tech (oops, showing my age here, it is now a technology center) to take a class but they wanted me to learn to weld gates, etc. so I called a lady that has done some welding and she gave me lessons. It's really easy. I don't use those stick things. I use one that just feeds the wire by itself. I compare it to a glue gun on steroids! Actually, I'm probably less dangerous with a welder than I am with a hammer.
