I am now very lucky to have an opportunity to pursue my art & design while my team will be taking the reins and continue to do great things for the charities & brands we serve.
So, I am now a full-time Assemblage Artist & Designer with a passion for “up-cycling” & social good. Always the hunter and gatherer, I spent my growing up years searching in the creek behind my house where my daily finds were amassed and revered. Now I spend as much time as I can scouring flea markets, garage sales and salvage yards – finding interesting castoffs that in my eyes are treasures.
Each art piece I create is a one-of-a-kind and usually starts with a theme or metaphor. Something has to speak to me before I begin and the older and more worn the item is the better. It’s all about the character and the message.
I addition to my art, I also design & create furniture to include tables, lamps, wall-hangings, etc., etc…
Wikipedia describes assemblage art as an artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together found objects. I call it fascinating.

"Kind Words Will Unlock An Iron Door"
Here's one of my latest industrial art piece with a great message.
ICE COLD Canada Dry Ginger Ale Wall Art
Vintage tin Canada Dry Ginger Ale advertising signs re-purposed into wall art.
The Five Feet Table
Can you figure out why I am calling this the “Five Feet” table?
Circuit Breaker Box Clock
See! you can make a clock out of just about anything! Here’s one made out of a cool old green circuit breaker box.
Wiry Joe Clock
Old tin wire spools have some of the best graphics and Wiry Joe is no exception!
Vintage Cash Register Art Piece
That Georgia! Always on the lookout for cool things for me and a wonderful old cash register was no exception…
The JennyK Room @ Georgia's First Occasional Sale
Georgia was wonderful enough to let us use an entire room at her first Occasional Sale and we pretty much filled up every inch of it! And can I say how amazing Georgia and Melissa are?? I got sick the day before the big sale and they pulled it off like the champs they are.
Toot Your Own Horn
I have a thing for old brass musical instrument mouth pieces and when Sue showed us her stash of them and mentioned something about "tooting your own horn" my creative gears started turning... Here's my artistic take on some self-esteem fun.
"The Key to Your Universe is That You Can Choose"
I found 10 pounds of vintage keys in a bucket at the salvage yard – a cool find in itself, but the best part was that most of them still had their old hand written tags to include Testing Center, IBM Machine Cabinet, Trophy Case, etc.
Vintage 78 Record Clock
Here are the first of my two projects I created for the Record Contributor's Challenge: A clock made from a old 78 and an up-cycled clock mechanism & hands.
Vintage Pitch Pipe Flower Vase
Dried lavender and a vintage pitch pipe - it doesn't get any easier than this.
Wall Hanging Made With Multi-Colored Springs
I had the time of my life at the junkyard this weekend... An entire dumpster full of new truck parts came in the day before and they were saving it for me to pick through first. We're talking TONS of washers in interesting shapes and sizes, small medium and large lug nut covers, metal bits and pieces that who knows what they went to, etc. But the highlight of the hunt was finding these amazing steel multi-colored, multi shaped springs. Orange, blue, green, red, yellow, black, gray...
Vintage School Map Occasional Tables
Remember the framed vintage school map post I did a few months back? I still had the East Coast section and have been saving it for just the right project. Enter the two fun, funky, metal table stands I found at the swap meet this weekend...
Meet Reece, my first Assemblage Art apprentice!
Reece is the son of a great gal I work with and is a budding artist. I’ve taken him under my wing to teach him assemblage art and we’re having a great time. My long-term dream is to be able to work with kids to use art as a way to build self esteem and expression.
Heavy Table Makes a Mighty Statement
Well, the stuff I’ve been finding at the Salvage Yard keeps getting heavier and heavier… The guys are starting to tease me now because everything takes a forklift to lift into my truck. The parts for this indoor / outdoor table were no exception. It’s mighty and it's heavy!
Repurposed Desk Made With Vintage Type and Machinist Table Base
My *new* desk made from a machine shop table and vintage type is complete. It measures a whopping 4' wide by 8' long. It took over two months to put together and I am so happy with the results.
HERCULES POWER Mirror Project
Here's a neat little mirror project that gives a self-esteem boost every time you look into it.
Block-O-Blocks
Here's a fast but fun wall hanging project you can create using old wooden children’s blocks.
Faucet Knob Art Pieces
As many of you know, I have a thing for metal faucet / valve knobs and usually come home from the junkyard with a bunch every week. In a previous post I showed and example of a wind chime and here are my latest wall art creations.
Doll Leg Vase
OK, now for something on the silly (but fun) side. Here is a vase I created out of an really old doll leg. I attached it to a heat register grate for the texture and then found some interesting metal banding and thought it made the perfect garter belt!
To Ride a Horse is to Ride the Sky
I found this amazing old metal horse at Geo’s store (I tell you Geo has the BEST stuff!) and have been saving her for the perfect assemblage project because she is THAT wonderful.
Putting a Little Light on the Subject
Jim (Junk Architect) you've inspired me! Here’s a neat little lamp project I put together using an old car/truck headlamp, a rusty round thing and a cool stand I bought at Geo's store.
JennyK's Office Re-Junking Part #3
I've been a busy bee with my office re-junking project and am really happy with the results so far. In this post I show my medical cabinet printer and office supply cabinet, my gurney "side board" and some fun art along the way... The next posting will be of my "new" desk. Stay tuned!
My Latest Salvage Yard Haul
Well, the last couple visits to my favorite salvage yard produced some wonderful round-shaped finds and fabulous letters!
Play the Music, Not the Instrument
Well, I must admit the Piano Paper Roll JMS Challenge, was just that, a serious challenge for me! First of all, I’m not sure if you’ve ever worked with these bits of paper fun, but they are very brittle and tear easily – plus, I rarely incorporate paper into my art, so this project had me stumped. Then, on top of that, my rolls weren't in English but Lithuanian(!) so I couldn’t pull a design theme from words in the music. Hmmm – what was a girl to do?
"To receive everything, one must open one's hands and give."
I love this quote and feel the vintage glove forms carry the message really well. They are attached to an old piece of galvanized metal and I used my vintage typewriter to type the message on an old clay coated flash card.
Push Lawnmower Lamp
I've decided to re-junkify my office at work and will be posting a series of photos so you can join me along the way.... Here's my first real "junking" piece - a push lawnmower lamp I made with my father over 10 years ago. I decided it would look good up against my blue wall shining on the metal "GATHER". It is sitting on an old hospital gurney but that's for another post...
Industrial Lamp Turned Display
I posted a project back in November about turning an industrial lamp into a display and showed it on an old gear and full of Scrabble tiles. Here's my latest update filled with colored aluminum washers. Here's a link to the earlier post where I explain how I make these: http://www.junkmarketstyle.com/item/2886/industrial-lamp-turned-display
Centrifuge Pencil & Pen Holder
I'm working on my work office re-do and here is another fun project I wanted to share. I made a pen & pencil holder out of a blood centrifuge. I found the top and the tubes together (actually found two of them) then "married" that onto a metal base with a crown bolt on the top. It's all metal and it spins all sassy-like!
Rusty Sprocket End Table
Here's a marriage made in rust heaven! I found this wonderful rusty sprocket wheel a couple months back as I was leaving the salvage yard (so glad I was there when I was) and had been eyeing the heavy blue stand at Geo's store for months and decided to put the two together and make a fantastic end table. And for those of you who remember my "haul" post back in November, this is the piece I used to make the instant outdoor table...
Glue Caddy to Go!
I have a couple different work stations in my Lab, and find myself forever wondering where I put my glue(s) down. Here’s a quick little something I put together to both house & carry my supplies.
"Give" for Kelsey
This piece was commissioned by a gal to give to her daughter Kelsey. She saw my original "give" piece and was so taken by it that she asked me to create another one especially for her.
To err is human - to forgive, canine.
To err is human - to forgive, canine. Such a true statement!
"Grow"
A subtle reminder that Spring always arrives...
"If I try to be like her, who will be like me?"
One of my favorite charities is Girls Inc. and I created this piece with their motto in mind: Inspiring All Girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold.
Wisdom Gal For A Special Friend
My closest friend recently lost her mother and I needed to find a way to deal with my own sadness. I put this Wisdom Gal together as a gift to her.
"Every Wall Is A Door"
I've been looking for just the right found object pieces to assemble together and give one of my favorite Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes justice...
Assemblage Fun With Georgia Moon & JennyK
Geo and I try to get together every couple weeks for some silly fun assemblage time and tonight was no exception! Please meet Baby Boy & King of Hearts!
Viking Cowboy and Sailor Joe Lock People
OK, now for some silliness! I found these amazing old brass lock bodies at my favorite salvage yard and immediately thought they would make fabulous little people bodies. So, I put the quotes and metaphors away for a little while (grin) and came up with these two fun little guys. I’m feeling more of these coming on so stay tuned…
Wisdom Gal
Please meet the first in my series of Wisdom Gal Assemblages...
GOOD EATS Clock Using Vintage Wood Type
As many of you already know, I have a thing for (and quite a collection of) old wood type and use it in my projects wherever I can. A local restaurant asked me to assemblage them a wall clock and after much puttering around in my lab with nothing striking me, I decided to pull out the type and see what sort of design I might come up with.
A New Year's Resolution
I decided my first assemblage for 2009 needed to set the tone for me for the rest of the year...
Fun Little Organization Project
Here's a cute way to create some instant wall storage... Santa brought lots of fabric and notions this year and we wanted to come up with a “work in progress” wall where things were put away but still readily available. We were pretty set on using baskets but wanted a unique way to hang them...
Create a Special Advent Calendar for Next Christmas
Here’s a wonderful heirloom project you can start creating and collecting for next year. This advent calendar has been in the family for over 30 years and we’re as excited to open and hang little trinkets and treasures now as we were when we were young! Mom and Aunt Elsa fabricated it out of burlap, felt and ribbon/tassel and we all collected the treasures over the years to include a special rock found during a favorite summer vacation, an old silver dime from Grandpa, a swimming medal, etc., etc.
Vintage Surveyor's Ruler Art Piece
Remember the post I made using the pencils all stacked together? This piece is similar in the way I put them together - take a look: I found this surveyor’s ruler at the swap meet and paid $5 for it. I cut it so the red numbers would have a nice cadence when stacked next to each other. I then found a great “measure” quote and framed in a stopwatch, then placed it into calipers and attached it to the front with an old piece of hardware. I like the results a lot.
Holiday Junk Angels by Georgia Moon & JennyK
We did it! Georgia and I had our first arting day in my garage (AKA lab) today. Georgia picked the theme: Angels and brought along two boxes of amazing bits and pieces which we combined with my stuff and HAD A BALL! In addition to making the angels, Sophie kept us entertained by trying to hunt down the mouse that jumped out of one of the file drawers as I was pulling it open. I about jumped in Georgia’s lap, scaring her silly and haven’t laughed that hard in way too long… Hey, also a shout -out to junkermidge's post about hardware angels. That gal taught us the way to use the hinges as wings. Take a look at her post: http://www.junkmarketstyle.com/item/3667/hardware-angel-ornaments
A Little Christopher Robin Advice We Should All Make a Promise To Keep...
This is one of my favorite A.A. Milne quotes and I wanted the girl in the sculpture to embody it by holding the key to the promise to herself.
Inspired By Gretchen - Old Garage Door Headboard
Thank you for the headboard inspiration Gretchen. LOVE IT!
Table Top Made With Old Printing Press Type
I have a thing for old type: wood, metal – whatever. If it’s a letter, I fall all over it and find a way to incorporate it into my designs.
cherish the journey
Here's a precious little art piece I created with important words to live by...
Galvanized Bins Wall Unit
Remember the old galvanized bins I found at the junkyard a couple weeks back? I decided to make a wall unit out of them to display some of our treasures…
Have You Got The Time?
We made it the goal this year to create as many Christmas gifts as possible and who doesn’t need a new clock? Plus the mechanisms are really affordable and you can create one from darn near everything. So, I got busy this weekend and started checking folks off the list. Take a look:
Vintage School Map Graphic
OK, time for an inside project. No sandals allowed in the photos - I promise! I took a vintage school map I found at the swap meet for next to nothing and framed it up in a very old sliding glass door off of a store display cabinet. The imperfections in the old glass paired up with the well loved map makes for an interesting wall hanging. I have six more of these doors and am considering framing those amazing bus scrolls as a series...
Instant outdoor (or indoor) table
This is one of those "right place at the right time projects". I've had the table base in the garage for years just waiting for the right use.
THANK YOU & my latest salvage yard bonanza!

I found these WONDERFUL wood letterpress numbers used for billboard printing and took a view finder from and old Brownie camera and used it to frame up the quote. The letter measures at least 9"...
the camera
This is a neat one made of an old camera front, afixed to a brass screen of some kind, and attached to a cutting board I painted black. The old exam eye glasses were made so the lens could be changed...

industrial lamp turned display
I was reading Debbiejean's "HELP" post from Oct 12 and the snap of the industrial lamps in photo #4 caught my eye... Here's a quick design treatment I've done with some lamps of my own.
Just "be"
For "be" I used an old (and heavy!) cake decorating stand as my base, then added an old wood and metal discus (used in track and field events), topped that with a flower frog, placed the "be"...
"Inspire" for Jen
Here's a little assemblage I put together for my writer pal, Jen. She was experiencing writer's block so I thought a little inspiration would help. Please note the metal typewriter arms(?) chair...
Bird In A Cage
Another one I made out of a burner pad, light cover, harmonica, beautiful old green wingnut and other bits and pieces....
Fun little project out of some old gears....
I found these gool rusty gears at an old place in Centralia, WA, added the little guy and and topped it all off with a cloche.

Hi Ladies!
posted: 6:46 pm on December 8thThanks so much for the wonderful feedback! It feels great to hear.
Cynthia, I would recommend doing a square surface rather than a circle as most (if not all) type comes in squares and you'll need to trim corners, etc. if you try it on a round. And yes, most type is about the same height.
Can you imagine an entire wall in type? Or a back splash in a kitchen? :-)
Thanks again Ladies!

posted: 7:32 pm on November 12thRe: Fun little project out of some old gears....
Ultrajunk - yes, I would do small lots but since you have so many would probably pick a Buy It Now price you are comfortable with and list them that way. We sell on eBay and so many of our artist customers appreciate getting what they need quickly. Do a little past auction / past Buy It Now searching and see what the average price is. And roll shipping into the cost so it is Free for the buyer - big selling point! This time of year you'll do well. Let me know if I can help with anything else. :-) And let me know if you'll sell any of those huge gears you posted the other day. I about lost control when I saw those. :-) :-)
