ugly bookshelf

found this next to the dumpster behind the local thrift store. The back of it was coming off, so I just nailed it into place again.

This piece is giving me trouble-

first I tried to paint it white (simple, but classic) and sijnce it's veneer, that didn't work at all. I tried regular paint and spray paint and if it sticks at all, it just drips and looks awful.

The I found left-over wallpaper, and tried to cover it. The wallpaper itself is very pretty- BUT, it didn't stick that well despite massive amount of glue and now it looks pretty tacky.

As of right now, it's hiding in my guest room in the corner. I puts tons of books on it to disguise it but it still bugs me. Maybe someday I'll take it out and try again. :(

MAYBE PUT ANOTHER PIECE OF PLYWOOD WHICH I WOULD THEN PUT SOME PADDING AND MAKE IT A FLAT TYPE OF BENCH OR WTHOUT PADDING MAKE IT A COFFE TABLE OF SORTS. OR TURN IT WITH ITS BACK DOWNWARD AND PUT A PEICE OF PLYWOOD ON THE TOP PART, PAINT THE BOARD, AND USE THE 3 CUBBY HOLES AS STORAGE. THIS IS JUST A ROUGH IDEA. STILL BRAINSTORMING..... Now that I have harassed the bookshelf w/ coats on paint, glue and wallpaper, I think the sheet music will stick better to the surface. Posted: 1:23 pm on January 23rd
MimiToria writes: You need to prime it with primer first to get anything to stick to veneer like this. Then you can paint it or deco podge cool paper in it.

georgiamoon writes: Try this...glue some fabric on the shelves and then cut trim pieces to go all around the perimeter an across the shelf fronts and paint those, It at least would look good from the front. Just an idea, georgia Posted: 1:38 pm on January 22nd

I've had some success with those.
