Here are two vintage cheese crates that I refinished and repurposed to use as ring displays for when i sell my jewelry at shows.
they started out plain; somewhat dry and splintery. to bring them up to usable grade, i cleaned them of all the dirt, dust, cobwebs, mold etcetera. After they were clean, they got a very light sanding. The imprinted graphics were recessed by a smidge, so i was able to do this light splinter taming without hurting the images.
also employed were a couple of unfinished old cutlery drawers. these had no cute graphics, so i painted them simply in white.
here is another cutlery tray with its larger space filled with felt infill. It is able to hold rings, barrettes and some winter flower brooches.
The cheese crate looks like this in the post polyurethane finishing and with its ring gripping, felt lining. It is just waiting for sown flower rings.

I redesigned these ring displays after i saw ones made from felted sweaters. those were phenomenal, but the ability to get good yardage for lining the boxes was easier to achieve with felt.
