"The Rocks Box" or is it "The Box Rocks"?

I love it!  Hope she does too!
Well, its not exactly a before pic but this was after about step number 410.  Just kidding.  (But there really were a lot of steps for what I thought would be a simple project.)
A view of the inside.  The box part is an old drawer I found at the thrift shop for $2.  I added little tags to some of the cubby holes so she can add from where the rock came.
The map in the back is of the Holy Land.  Just right for Christmas, I think.

Christmas project number 1 is complete!!!

My mother has asked for one thing this year for Christmas, "a box for her rocks".  I know that sounds really odd but people have been bringing her rocks from all around the world for years so she has a really neat collection and she wanted something to display them in but she wanted something homemade.  I'm sure she had something really simple in mind when she asked for it but, me being me, I wanted it to be beautiful but, of course, I had to incorporate junk!

I started with an old drawer I found at the thrift shop for $2.  I wanted to use an old window for the front but it really would've been too heavy with the added weight of the rocks.  I used boring old rough wood, sanded within an inch of its life, cut in a grid pattern that just came out of my head.  Did I mention that she said she wanted it to have 50 spaces?  Geez!  Hubby also cut the wood for the door, added a piece of plexiglass, and a mismatched drawer handle and knob.  I primed and painted what felt like 500 coats into every nook and cranny and mod podged a 1983 National Geographic map of the Holy Land into the back.  Then, since I had a 40% coupon at Hobby Lobby, I picked up a little decorative wood piece and added that to the top of the door for a cute little finishing touch after painting and glazing it with black stain.

This was one of those projects that was much simpler in theory than in practicum but it'll be worth it because I think she's going to love her rock curio!

I know y'all are probably sick of hearing about my Mama but it seems that so much of my "junking" is somehow related to her!  hee,hee
