Its like a science experiment- only funner.
Before the experiment...

It's like a science experiment- only "funner".

I "acquired" this lovely little pallet from the rubbish heap while picking my son up from martial arts class... luckily, he's too young to be embarresed by Mom's dumpster dive.  It's smaller than your average pallet and would make the perfect shelf for the pewter souvenirs I've been collecting.

I wanted the shelf to be dark but didn't want to loose the rustic appeal.  This gave me the opportunity to try something new- homemade, ebonizing wood stain made from steel wool, salt, vinegar, rusted metal and time!

The chemical reaction is immeiate- you can see the wood darken before your eyes.  It's pretty cool.  I've laid a couple gears on the wood to see if I can get their outline stained into the pallet... we'll see how it turns out in the morning.
