My father gave me these skis today.  He received them 60 years ago as a child.  I need to know what I can use to restore the wood safely.  Also, any ideas on how to display them on a wall without damage?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated ... thanks!

bolmscheid writes: Thank you for all of the tips on how to fix up these skis. I decided to just try a satin poly on them which really brought out the grain and color of the wood (after 4 coats however) ... now I just have to figure out where to hang them up ... will post a picture when I get that accomplished. bolmscheid writes: Okay ... one more question ... where do I find Skidmore's?
I've tried Menard's, Home Depot and Lowe's with no luck. I will be in the Twin Cities this weekend if anyone knows of a place that carries this ... Posted: 8:08 pm on October 22nd

Your skis are beautiful. If they were mine I would try the Skidmore's. We use it a lot on our wood projects here at JM and it does give the nicest finish. Follow the directions on the label and try it in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will give you the desired look. Poly is an option too, just more labor intensive. As for how to use them, the possibilities are endless. I agree that they would make great shelves or as a display with greens this winter, maybe even part of a coat rack or picture holder....

Whatever you decide, best of luck and enjoy!

chosmosw writes: After Christmas my vintage Ski's, skates etc come out for decorating. Last year at Christmas I had 2 big baskets of fresh greenery by my front door and in Jan. I stuck a ski and pole in each. If I display them inside I wrap a leather shoe lace around the middle and hang them in an x over the sofa, or prop them in a corner.

Let us all know what you decide!

I'm going to look into the Skidmore wood products that Sue and Ki have mentioned in their other projects but I'm thinking just a coat of poly should do the trick because after all these years, they seem to have retained most of their color. Will post a picture once I'm finished! Posted: 9:15 pm on October 20th

CottageElements writes: I've seen these made into shelfs by using "L" brackets and they're adorable. You can put the "L" brackets (or more decorative brackets) onto the wall and just lay the ski on top of them as to not damage the ski. I've also seen them with hooks added to them for a coat rake if you don't mind putting screws into them. I'm not one to refinish furniture as I usually paint versus stripping. Do they need to be stripped or can you just sand a little and put a waterbase poly over them? I'm sure we have some other members who could give you better advise on that than me. Good luck!
