What's New Pussy Cat - Contributor Challenge
May 26th, 2009 in blog, member junkI’ll tell you what’s new Pussy Cat, my Contributor’s Challenge project is done. Sue assigned the task of coming up with SOMETHING using vinyl record albums and Tom Jones as my inspiration. So I got Tom to stop by for a beer and we did some major brainstorming on a design. A case of brews later (and a bucket of Extra Crispy from KFC) I had my final concept sketch.
The base is some kind of galvanized float, not sure what it went to. A threaded rod is attached to the base and the records secured into place with nuts and washers. Pieces of plastic tubing are positioned between the albums to hide the steel rod. I painted a section of an old broomstick red and secured it to the top of the rod. Finally a light socket is attached to the end of the broomstick. I’m not sure what the galvanized shade was originally used for but it met the project specifications…JUNK. Anyway, the shape was perfect for a shade so I drilled a bunch of holes in it for that funky Studio 54 look.
Tommy, thanks BIG TIME for the cool ideas and especially for making the food run to KFC…your bud...Junk Architect

It does fit the song well, oh the 60's memories of him with my girlfriend. You did a fabulous job!

"I, Who Have Nothing" want to tell you that I "Can't Stop Loving You" and your work!!! "With These Hands" of yours, you create true masterpieces. Who wouldn't want this Tom Jones inspired piece, lighting the way to their "Green, Green Grass of Home" (or maybe in your case, the living room)??? Why it's "Not Unusual" to marvel at your talent. We all have done it before and we will continue to do it again.
Thank goodness you know how to wire lamps properly, as to avoid "Burning Down the House."
Seriously, this piece is brilliant in how it came to be, how it turned out and the writings that went with it. What a fine sense of humor you have! "Some Other Guy" may not, but then again, they aren't Jim Healy!
Thanks for letting me "Take a Minute Of Your Time." "I Get a Kick Out of You" and your ideas. Although I'm not a big fan of Tom's, I am one of yours.
"All I Can Say Is Goodbye" for now. Keep up the good work. LOVE this piece. gailmaire

Wow. You've done the "Sex Bomb" proud. I especially love the way you tied in the Studio 54 look with the holes in the shade. So classy. This lamp will truly go down in JunkArchitect history.
The only thing you could have done to top it off was adding some chest hair. Maybe next time.
Bravo Jim.

I carted a whole mess of vinyl to Austin with me recently... The Three Suns — what a floor lamp they would make! So happy to have stumbled onto JunkMarketStyle. Sincerely, Posted: 11:32 am on May 26th
